We meet with Erik, founder of Dr. Catsby’s and designer of the whisker friendly bowl.
Hi Erik, you have created a unique pet business. How did is start?
As designers, we spent our careers creating brands, stories, products, and experiences for our clients. So, it was a natural progression to create our own brand and with our love of pets, it was a no brainer to dive into the pet world.
Your bowl features a shallow design to prevent ‘whisker-fatigue’. How do you come up with new ideas?
Observation, awareness and attention to detail are key for finding voids in our systems and cultures to identify needs.
Do you have pets?
I grew up with many dogs and currently own a Shitzoh named Biggie while my business partner JC owns 3 cats that he rescued from the streets of NYC (2) and Bejing (1).
There’s Gixxer who was named after the Suzuki sport bikes. He was found next to JC’s parked bike and loves those bike rides. Then Trouble who’s earned his name during the adoption process when he bit JC and sent him to hospital for 2 nights and a $16,000 bill. And finally, Kilo, who was one kilogram when he found her on the streets of Beijing.
Is there anything else that you are working on and for which we can have a sneak peek?
We can’t show anything now before the launch, but our vision remains on health and wellness for our furry friends.
And finally… if a cat owner asked you for your advice on how to pamper their kitten and you only had a few minutes to give them your best tip, what would it be?
Hug them, pet them, play with them, talk to them. Love is all you need.
Nice to have you here
