Every September London’s Design Festival turns the city into a spectacle for design devotees. Over 9 days, exclusive events, showcases, talks and trade shows pop up all over town. Visitors get to meet British and International designers and makers and see what’s new in textile design, home furnishings and accessories. Beyond finished designs, makers of recycled materials are showcasing their new inventions.
As in previous years, we love visiting trade show London Design Fair at the Old Truman Brewery in search of new designer pet products. And our favourite find this year was newly formed company Pets and Pods.
Recycled and recycable
Their original range of 5x geometric pet furniture spheres was my highlight of the show. Many visitors stopped to take a look, feel the materials and investigate the unique shapes of the five pieces. Talking to founder and carpenter Victor about the range, we immediately loved his design ethos ‘recycled and recycable’. Because his philosophy sits visibly at the heart of everything he has created.
Using recycled materials
A durable, thick PET felt covers the 5x unique pet furniture pods giving them a beautifully textured surface. The PET felt is a material that is completely made from recycled plastic bottles. We couldn’t see a better use. And besides offering good acoustic properties, the material doesn’t contain any chemical binders which makes the pods fully pet safe.
The pods’ lids are also made from recycled materials: compressed wood pallet waste collected from sawmills. As a result, this material has the lowest levels of formaldehyde emissions for this type of wood. Organic dyes are used achieving natural looking soft grey colours. The solid pods offer air or play-holes along the side as well as the top which can be closed optionally. Fake fur cushions in various colours are planned too.
Green light for pet furniture made from recycled materials
Combining what’s good for the environment with brand new design thinking is the future of furniture design. Pets and Pods’ successful launch means that production with recycled materials will start this autumn and we are hoping to be able to stock the range in our Make them Roar shop soon.
